Il Campo - Siena's Main Square in Tuscany

Today we visited the Il Campo (The best square in all of Italy) and went to Siena's Main Square in the Tuscany Region. Visited the San Domenico Church (The Church of the Patron Saint - St. Catherine).  In the main piazza is Siena's cathedral area and duomo. It is the ultimate tribute to the Virgin Mary - 1,000 popes keep watch from the duomo.

Twice a year in Siena's Palio, a horse race is held. (July 2 and August 16).  Tuscany is made up of different districts and each district has its own colors.  A horse and rider represent each district in the horse race.  They race around the interior of the square. It is said that many of the horses finish the race without their rider, who has fallen off somewhere on the track during the race.  The winner of the race has bragging rights over the other districts until the next race.  In that the city square is made of cobble stones, dirt has to be brought in to make the race track.

We then had dinner downtown by the train station in an Italian Restaurant of all places.  In Tuscany is also San Gimignano which has 14 medieval towers of the 13th Century vintage.  These are a tribute to Romeo and Juliette.
